NORFOLK, Va. - When vaccines rolled out in Virginia for the first time in December, healthcare workers were put in the front of the line, but not all of them lined up. We initially allocated [the] vaccine hoping 100% of healthcare workers would want to get vaccinated. That s not been the case, said Dr. Danny Avula, who s overseeing vaccination efforts in the Commonwealth for the Virginia Department of Health.
It appears some were hesitant at first. Dr. Avula says health systems he s talked with report about 50 to 60% of their workers wanted a vaccine at first, but after about a month of vaccines, attitudes appear to be changing. Some of the folks who were waiting and seeing have seen the first wave go through, and in some cases get the second dose, and now they re signing up to be vaccinated, he said.
Johnson County plans to receive nearly 6,000 additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines this week as it continues efforts to vaccinate more than 25,000 health care providers.

Why COVID Vaccines are Falsely Linked to Infertility
Jan. 12, 2021 There’s no evidence that the new vaccines against COVID-19 cause infertility, yet that’s a worry that’s been cited by some health care workers as a reason they’re reluctant to be first in line to get the shots.
Across the country, significant numbers of health care workers have balked at getting the new vaccines.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in a recent briefing that 60% of Ohio’s nursing home staffers had declined their shots. In Georgia, an infection prevention nurse who coordinates COVID vaccines for the 30,000 employees in her health system said that so far, fewer than 33% had gotten the shot. The rest had decided to “wait and see.” The nurse disclosed the numbers on the condition that we not reveal what hospital she worked for, as she was not authorized to speak to reporters.
