An opportunity for universal health coverage in New Mexico

Credit Peter Goodman Commentary: Many New Mexicans say it’s time for a New Mexico Health Security Plan. I agree. This Legislature should pass the Health Security Planning and Design legislation (HB203), to establish an approximately four-year, publicly accountable, transparent process to design that plan. Health Security is backed by a huge coalition of groups, including the Hispanic Farmers and Ranchers. Las Cruces, Anthony, and Doña Ana County support it. (There’s no real opposition except big insurance companies.) Three studies have concluded that creating our own health plan will be a great investment, through which we can confront problems of rising healthcare costs and a large uninsured population.

On Jan. 28, nine statewide health professions organizations sent a letter to legislators and the governor in support of the 2021 Health Security Bill. As a Board Member of the Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign, I am pleased to share the letter with readers. Dr. Tyler Taylor Dear New Mexico Legislators, Our 9 organizations represent almost every arm of the state s healthcare system. We treat those with heart disease, and we start IVs. We help people with debilitating pain find relief, as well as those with mental health conditions. We fill prescriptions, do health screenings, and deliver babies. In clinics, offices, pharmacies, ERs, and hospitals across New Mexico, we are there. And during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have continued to be there for our fellow New Mexicans.

Kate Ford & Hilda Maldonado: Allow School Districts to Reopen for In-Person Instruction Immediately

Hilda Maldonado (Santa Barbara Unified School District photo) Kate Ford (Santa Barbara Unified School District photo) The COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened the disparity between the haves and have nots, and this has been painfully evident in the schools that are open in Santa Barbara County. Our district has followed every mandate and shifting rules, and we have been ready to open for weeks. Then came Gov. Gavin Newsom’s stay-at-home order in early December, and we were not allowed to reopen. In December, we wrote a letter to Gov. Newsom demanding an explanation for the disparate treatment of school districts that were ready to reopen. We received a response from Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of the California Health & Human Services Agency, that they would look into our request, but have not received a further response. Now, it has been almost two months.
