Priti Patel has urged police to focus on the high-risk events in areas of the country with the highest coronavirus transmission rates when enforcing restrictions over Christmas.
A letter sent to chief constables in England and Wales last week said they should increase visible patrols, amid concerns over the potential spread of Covid-19 at festive gatherings and New Year’s Eve parties.
The home secretary acknowledged that the 43 forces are operationally independent, but called for a common approach to indoor events where the virus can spread easily.
The letter, which was also signed by the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), thanked officers for their work throughout the year and outlined priorities over the coming weeks and months.

Dreem Bar on Westfield Street TWO licensed premises have been hit with fines for failing to comply with coronavirus regulations. Dreem Bar on Westfield Street in St Helens town centre has been served two fixed penalty notices (FPNs) by St Helens Borough Council, while The Vulcan Inn in Newton-le-Willows was given an FPN by Merseyside Police. An FPN for £1,000 was initially served on Dreem Bar on Wednesday, December 16 under the Health Protection Regulations 2020 for failing to maintain adequate social distancing in the premises. Being the first such enforcement, a concession of 50 percent is available if paid within 14 days. Meanwhile, a second FPN was served on Dreem Bar on Friday, December 18 using the escalation process – £2,000 without chance of concession – for failure to collect and hold Track and Trace information from customers.

LONDON: The organiser of anti-lockdown protests in which five police officers were injured and 29 people were arrested faces a fine of £10,000, the Metropolitan Police have said.
The woman was identified as the organiser of the demonstrations in which more than 150 people gathered on Saturday and marched through parts of central London just as Tier 4 restrictions for the capital were being announced.
Several clashes occurred between officers and unmasked demonstrators, who chanted “we demand freedom”. The Met said that the protest “endangered the health of Londoners” and that those arrested had been charged with breaching Health Protection Regulations. It added that three men had also been charged with assaulting an emergency worker.

The woman was identified as the organiser of the protest after around 150 anti-lockdown activists descended onto Parliament Square yesterday amid fears the country faced tighter restrictions as the number of Covid cases continued to surge.
The force said three men have also been charged with assaulting an emergency worker and have been bailed to appear at a London magistrates court in the new year.
The three demonstrators are: Christmas Fallah, 35, Joss Lillis, 27, and Leon Larose, 28.
