Health Minister-designate, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu Minister-designate of Health, Kweku Agyeman-Manu, has revealed that a lot of Western countries among others, are chasing Ghana for nurses. The Health Minister in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term made the revelation during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, 10 February 2021 after a member of the committee, Mr James Agalga, demanded to know why Ghana, despite not having enough health professionals, exported some nurses to Trinidad & Tobago as well as Barbados. “I will say bilateral relations for diplomacy, just like we receive Chinese and other foreigners, I believe our President stretched his hand to also help our neighbours who needed some support. Nurses want their wages adjusted in line with their duties

Nurses want their wages adjusted in line with their duties Article by February 4, 2021 Frustration appears to be growing among a handful of nurses at the Psychiatric Hospital. They claim that for years, they are being paid on a scale below their level of qualifications. Psychiatric Hospital Director David Leacock acknowledged some of the institution’s public health workers are still waiting on appointments. He, however, noted that Minister of Health and Wellness Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic addressed the issues in a recent staff meeting. The hospital chief argued that it “seems a bit malicious” for affected nurses to bring it into the public domain.

#BTEditorial - Can Gov t be sued for recent COVID-19 deaths?

February 2, 2021 Our Constitution entrusts a duty of care on Government for the protection and safeguard of the lives of Barbadian citizens. Indeed, the “neighbour principle” of the celebrated Donoghue v Stevenson case (1932), indicates that if it is reasonably foreseeable that a defendant does something negligent and there is risk that a claimant could suffer injury or harm as a result, then that defendant is liable. Legal practitioners often state that where there is a right, there is a remedy (Ubi jus ibi remedium). And this holds true whether the perpetrator of a wrong is an individual, company or Government. And since Government is a legal person, one should never view it as some abstract entity that cannot be touched. There are two situations that in keeping with our democracy and individual rights, that need ventilation, even in this age of COVID-19. Indeed, COVID-19 makes venting even more necessary.
