COVID-19 cases on rise in 6 northwest Louisiana parishes

View Comments COVID-19 cases are dropping across northwest Louisiana with only one parish showing an increase in the last 14 days for a time period ending Sunday. Caddo Parish is the only parish in Region 7 with a 14-day change in COVID-19 cases showing an increase. The increase, though, is small at only 4%. Caddo Parish has 26,022 cases and 742 COVID-19 deaths through Sunday. The parish has 26% of its population fully vaccinated and 65% of those over 65 vaccinated. The state has 28.7% of its residents fully vaccinated. Every other parish in Region 7, and Lincoln Parish outside of Region 7, showed decreases in COVID-19 cases as their 14-day changes.

View Comments LSU Health Sheveport s Center for Emerging Viral Threats will continue administering COVID-19 vaccines this week across Shreveport and Bossier City at multiple sites in each city. The CEVT also has scheduled vaccine opportunities for students and staff of participating Caddo and Bossier high schools. All Louisiana residents ages 16 and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Eligible residents must contact a participating provider to make an appointment. Patients who arrive without an appointment will not be vaccinated. Patients receiving Moderna or Pfizer vaccines will receive their second dose of the COVID vaccine at the same location they received their first dose. Second-dose appointments should be made during the administration of the first dose. If patients missed their second dose vaccination appointment they should immediately contact the provider of their first dose to schedule a new appointment.

COVID-19 in northwest Louisiana: Most parishes show decline

The 14-day change in COVID-19 cases is declining in six of 10 northwest Louisiana parishes. Natchitoches Parish has the biggest decline in cases for the 14-day period that ended Sunday. The parish had 47% fewer cases. Natchitoches Parish has 4,040 cases and 86 COVID-19 deaths. The parish is 20% fully vaccinated, which is 7% less than the state average. Other parishes with COVID-19 case declines include Bossier, DeSoto, Sabine, Claiborne and, outside of Region 7, Lincoln. DeSoto Parish has the second-largest decrease in cases for the last two weeks at 35%. The parish has 2,763 cases and 78 COVID-19 deaths. DeSoto is also 20% fully vaccinated. Claiborne Parish showed a 15% decline in cases. There have been 1,435 cases and 55 COVID-19 deaths in the parish. Claiborne is 21% fully vaccinated.

(KSLA) - On Thursday, April 29, Caddo Parish Public Schools started vaccinating students 16 and older. The shots began with students at CE Byrd High School. This is optional for students, and kids must have a parent or guardian’s permission. Students will receive the Pfizer vaccine. Right now, that’s the only shot approved for those as young as 16. LSU Health Shreveport’s Dr. John Vanchiere says this is a safe vaccine that kids need. Bossier Parish Schools says it’s planning to schedule a clinic before school lets out for the summer, but they haven’t determined exactly when yet.
