One of the new fashions in public discourse is to accuse opponents of being socialists. But what does that mean? The term, along with portraits of Karl Marx, were largely retired 30 years ago.
Having spent a career teaching economics, I have found the reincarnation of the idea a bit puzzling. To an economist, the term “socialism” refers to the government ownership of the means of production. But that is not how the term is being used.
Instead, the appellation “socialist” is applied to someone to imply that they are radicals. It has become a mostly meaningless label being pinned on others like a donkey tail. It’s just so much blather.
