Asa Hutchinson, the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services will end the state’s participation in the federal unemployment assistance after June 26. Hutchinson hopes the lowering of unemployment benefits will encourage people to return to work. However, several people said Monday that the money helps, including James Bauldwin, who said he doesn’t feel safe returning to work, having worked in an assisted living facility.

Biomass Firm Invests $40M to Build 3 Wood Pellet Plants

Biomass producer and supplier Drax Group is preparing to launch a $40 million project to build three new wood pellet production plants in Arkansas, the firm announced in a recent release posted to the Arkansas Economic Development Corporation’s website. The three “satellite” plants will have a combined capacity of about 120,000 kt/yr of wood pellets. Work on the first plant, located near a West Fraser sawmill in Leola, AR, is slated to commence this month. Drax plans to commission the new asset in October. Construction of the two other facilities will begin sometime in the next several months.

Ceramics Manufacturer Plans $9M Expansion at Arkansas Plant

Engineered ceramics maker CoorsTek revealed plans Monday for a new $9 million expansion project at its Benton, AR manufacturing facility that will boost its production capabilities, the Arkansas Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) announced Monday. “The expansion of our Benton facility is a key step in our long-term strategy for CoorsTek supporting the evolution and innovation of the defense and aerospace markets,” Jonathan Coors, the firm’s co-chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Benton has long been an important manufacturing hub for us, and the support and partnership we have experienced from both local and state governments has been a driving factor in our desire for continued investment in Arkansas.”

UA System Awarded $900,000 Workforce Training Grant

News No Comments The University of Arkansas System was awarded a three-year $900,000 CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to boost the state’s workforce recovery from the economic impact of COVID-19. Nine UA System institutions will collaborate on the project, led by the Arkansas Economic Development Institute (AEDI) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, to collect and analyze statewide workforce data and use outcomes to provide existing and bolstered education and training efforts through all seven of the UA System’s two-year colleges, along with two colleges of technology at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM).
