BUENOS AIRES - People obtaining a national identity document in Argentina were able to mark their gender with an X beginning Wednesday, under a presidential decree that puts the nation at the forefront of such issues in Latin America.
This new option, which extends beyond the standard male/female binary, is meant to safeguard gender identity, and comes after such a move has been under consideration since 2012.
A decree published in the country s official gazette stated that an X could signify a number of statuses ranging from non-binary or indeterminate to another meaning which can be used to identify a person who does not feel understood under the male/female binary.

Buenos Aires, July 10 : Argentine President Alberto Fernandez led celebrations marking the 205th anniversary of the declaration of independence with a call for unity in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. If we have courage and bravery, and we unite to understand once and for all that no one is saved alone, and that in addition to being free and equal we must be fraternal and in solidarity with one another, everything will be easier, Fernandez said on Friday.
Speaking from the Historic House of Independence Museum in San Miguel de Tucuman, capital of northern Tucuman province, Fernandez urged Argentines to maintain self-care and comply with social distancing measures.
