Johnston set for full WRC debut

Ulster Herald Advertisement Posted: 9:34 am February 5, 2021 By Chris Caldwell FINTONA’S Aaron Johnston and driver Oliver Solberg have been rewarded for a bright start behind the wheel for Hyundai Motorsport. The South Korean manufacturer have announced this morning that the young pair will drive one of their i20 Coupe WRC’s in the top flight of the sport after just one Rally2 outing in Monte Carlo last month. Having impressed during that run and earlier in the year at Arctic Rally Lapland, the pair have been given their chance to shine at the top table in  Arctic Rally Finland later this month.

Empty-handed Tänak switches focus to Finland

Empty-handed Tänak switches focus to Finland Ott Tänak will put his second consecutive Rallye Monte-Carlo no-score behind him and look to Finland’s frozen north next month to kick-start his FIA World Rally Championship season. The Estonian retired from last week’s season-opening French Alps event after suffering two flat tyres on the penultimate morning. While his departure from the Gap-based event was less dramatic than the crash which ruled him out in 2020, the result was the same: no points. “Last year, we knew what we did wrong,” said Tänak. “It’s less so this time. The first puncture was a mistake from the recce, it was very straightforward. I felt the puncture. But the second one was a slow one and I didn’t feel anything. It’s tough.”

Hyundai scores first 2021 podium result in Rallye Monte-Carlo

Hyundai Motorsport has opened its podium account for the 2021 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with a third-place finish for Thierry Neuville and Martin Wydaeghe in the Rallye Monte-Carlo. In their first WRC event as a crew, the Belgians picked up the pace when it was needed to advance into the podium positions on the final day. A strong second fastest time in Sunday’s opening stage (SS12 Puget-Theniers – La Penne) was followed by their second stage win of the weekend (SS13 Briançonnet – Entrevaux) cementing their third spot. Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio brought their rally-winning partnership to a conclusion with another trouble-free performance. The pair carded the second fastest time at the start of the repeated loop and confirmed their fifth-place finish in the Power Stage.
