Acting on complaint about ‘love jihad’, UP Police stops wedding of Muslim couple PTI
The man and the woman turned out to be both Muslims and adults.
The man told a newspaper later that he was thrashed with a leather belt at the station, an allegation denied by the police.
Kushinagar Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar Singh said someone from Gurnia village had informed them on Tuesday that a couple was getting “quietly” married there, and suspected it to be a case of “love jihad.”
The term is used by right-wing activists to refer to marriages allegedly performed for the sake of religious conversion.

LUCKNOW: The rumours of an alleged interfaith marriage in Kushinagar district led police to intervene and take the couple away to a police station on Tuesday. However, after allegedly keeping the couple overnight at the police station, the cops let them go following the arrival of girl’s kin who confirmed that she was a Muslim by birth and that no conversion had taken place.
As per the sources, while the groom Haider Ali, 39, alleged torture by the cops at Kasya police station in Kushinagar, the district police authorities denied the accusations saying that the couple was taken away after receiving a phone call that an inter-faith marriage was taking place wherein a Hindu woman had converted to Islam for the wedding.

The couple finally got married on Wednesday after the brother of the woman, Shabeela Khatoon, 28, arrived from Azamgarh district and told the police that if she wanted the wedding, the family had no objection.
The police in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, stopped a wedding ceremony on Tuesday and took away the couple following a phone call claiming that a Muslim man was marrying a Hindu woman after converting her, letting them go only the next day after finding that both were Muslims.
