Joe Biden remarks: Security expected to increase at Capitol as POTUS makes first address to Congress this week

This week, ahead of Joe Biden’s first 100 days as the new US president, he is set to make his first address to Congress. With plans underway this week, security in Washington is expected to be prepared to deter any anti-Biden protests that may occur. Security around the US Capitol is expected to increase this week as Biden is set to address Congress for the first time as president. DC officials have recently asked the Pentagon to authorize the district’s National Guard contingent to help local law enforcement handle any anti-Biden protests that may occur during this address. This comes as the Capitol is still reeling from the January 6 insurrection, where a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol to derail the formal voting to certify Biden’s election victory.

On denying the truth of the Armenian Genocide – Mondoweiss

The author’s family visiting the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan, Armenia “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye!” Matthew 7:5 It was December 2019 and I was driving home from a successful Christmas shopping run when I had to pull off the road and take a moment to collect myself. I had gotten an alert announcing that the US senate had, despite all odds and precedent, passed the Menendez Resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Even though the House had passed a resolution six weeks earlier recognizing the systematic mass murder and ethnic cleansing of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks as a genocide, almost nothing that passes in the House these days also passes in the Senate. I had not been holding my breath for the recognition to move forward in any way. Learning that the senate passed the resolution, by unanimous consent no less, took my breath away.

Armenian Genocide Warning by Far-Right Turkish Lawmaker Prompts Criminal Complaint

Armenian Genocide Warning by Far-Right Turkish Lawmaker Prompts Criminal Complaint On 4/28/21 at 9:58 AM EDT A criminal complaint has been filed against a far-right Turkish politician for tweets about the mass killings of Armenians, amid a heated debate over the topic in the days since President Joe Biden recognized the deaths as genocide. The Human Rights Association in Turkey has filed the complaint against the independent lawmaker Ümit Özdağ, who engaged in a Twitter spat with Garo Paylan, a Turkish politician of Armenian descent. On April 24, Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, Biden said: Each year on this day, we remember the lives of all those who died in the Ottoman-era Armenian genocide.

Turkish-Armenian lawmaker threatened over genocide remarks

April 28, 2021 ISTANBUL  Turkey’s Human Rights Association (IHD) filed a criminal complaint Tuesday against independent lawmaker Umit Ozdag over threats toward Garo Paylan, an Armenian deputy with the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), following remarks Paylan shared on Twitter regarding the Armenian genocide. The news comes as tensions remain high in Turkey following Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day on April 24, during which US President Joe Biden broke with his predecessors and recognized the 1915 mass killing of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottomans as genocide in a statement, putting further strain on US-Turkey relations. On Saturday, Paylan shared a tweet criticizing the fact that streets and schools in Turkey are currently named after Talaat Pasha, a leading architect of the Armenian genocide who served as the Ottoman Empire’s interior minister at the time of the events, comparing the situation to schools being named after Adolf Hitler in Germany.
