The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office said Louis Williams, 36, has been suspended without pay pending a termination hearing. Williams, who has worked for the sheriff’s office since March 2020, admitted to investigators that he was paid $1,000 to deliver a package to an inmate. Inside the package, investigators said, were 39 doses of Suboxone and 22.76 grams of synthetic marijuana, known commonly as “mojo.”

The sheriff’s office said OPSO’s health care workers vaccinated inmates aged 65 years old or older with comorbidities outlined by Louisiana’s health department. It added that new guidelines will make the vaccine eligible to inmates age 55 and older. OPSO said it expects to receive 200 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine by next week. The department said that it is “aggressively pursuing” the vaccine so that all inmates have the opportunity to get the shots.

On Friday, 33 inmates who qualified for COVID-19 vaccine received their doses. The Sheriff’s Office is aggressively pursuing the COVID-19 vaccine so that all inmates will be afforded an opportunity to receive it, the sheriff s office said in an issued statement. The Sheriff’s Office will receive 100 doses of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine today. Under expanded guidelines announced last week, the Sheriff’s Office can now offer the vaccine to inmates age 55 and older. An additional 200 doses of the Moderna vaccine are expected to be delivered next week.
