From Wars to the Spanish Flu, Why New Orleans Has Canceled Mardi Gras in the Past
On 2/16/21 at 1:40 PM EST
For the first time in decades, New Orleans will have no grand celebration today to mark Mardi Gras. The Carnival parade was canceled by city officials due to the ongoing pandemic, while bars and restaurants are shuttered and barricades are set up on Bourbon Street to discourage mass gatherings.

Louisiana Lt. Gov. talks Mardi Gras, tourism on third hour of Good Morning America

Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser was on the third hour of Good Morning America on Tuesday to discuss how the state would be celebrating Mardi Gras this year and encouraging tourists to return to the Gulf Coast.
Nungesser says that Mardi Gras has about a $1 billion impact on the state each year. That impact was not being felt in 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In New Orleans, Nungesser said that hotel bookings were down to 18 percent for the Mardi Gras holiday due to strict closures which included bars across the city.

Denver Newsroom, Feb 14, 2021 / 02:00 am (CNA).- Mardi Gras in New Orleans has been canceled only a handful of times, including during World War I and II, and the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918. This year will be added to that list, as the mayor of New Orleans has canceled Mardi Gras because of the coronavirus pandemic. But seminarians at Notre Dame Seminary are still planning to celebrate Mardi Gras, in their own way.
“I can’t have everybody go home and then come back again, as we’re trying to keep the virus out of the seminary. Which means everybody has to stay here,” said rector Fr. Jim Wehner. “So we’re going to do our own celebrations.”
