Carol Sutton, the “Queen of New Orleans theater” who also appeared in many movies and TV shows, died Thursday from COVID-19. She was 76.
Sutton had been hospitalized with COVID for “several days” at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, local ABC affiliate WGNO reported.

More recently, she popped into HBO’s “Lovecraft County,” the Ava DuVernay-created “Queen Sugar,” “Claws,” “True Detective,” the 2016 “Roots” remake and even 2012′s “21 Jump Street.”

She moved to television in 1974 with “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” with Cicely Tyson and had roles in “In the Heat of the Night” and the TV movie “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” with Avery Brooks.
Her recent TV credits included “Scream Queens,” the 2016 remake of the series “Roots,” “Treme,” “True Detective” and “Lovecraft Country.”
