MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) - After years of fighting and litigation over who can include Orlando in the name of their central Florida airport, Orlando International Airport officials and Orlando Melbourne International Airport officials have tentatively agreed that Orlando Melbourne International Airport will change its name to Melbourne Orlando International Airport.
The Melbourne Airport Authority announced the Space Coast airport s new name Friday. The name change was legally agreed upon to everyone s mutual satisfaction in a consent and license agreement, officials said. It must be approved by both airport boards.
The newly renamed Melbourne Orlando International Airport is about 70 miles (110 kilometers) southeast of Orlando International Airport, which is the busiest airport in Florida.

The Brevard Veterans Memorial Center on Merritt Island will host the Florida Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom event this weekend, headlined by a Sunday morning patriotic parade ranging from the Pineda Causeway northward to Cape Canaveral.
Nearly 40,000 motorcycles are expected at the event Memorial Day weekend, said Lance Armstrong, Florida chairman of the XXXIII Ride for Freedom.
The COVID-19 pandemic canceled last year s Ride for Freedom, so Rolling Thunder dispersed the national event to a series of smaller state-level rallies, including the one rolling through Brevard this Sunday.
What does Vero Beach airport runway project entail?
The $8.5 million runway project, to be paid for primarily by the Federal Aviation Administration, will begin in September and wrap up in March 2022.
Other shorter runways will be operable during the project, so the work will not affect corporate or private flight landings, Scher said.
Florida airport runways should be rehabilitated every 20 years, Scher said. The Vero Beach project includes repaving the runway and replacing signs, edge lights and other navigational aids.
The FAA money will be available this summer, which dictates the work begin in fall, Scher said. Air travel slows in summer, but it s not a good time to start the project because the rainy season isn t conducive to runway repaving, Scher said.
