Two rocket launches and an air show? Space Coast lives up to its name

Please consider a subscription to stay up-to-date on Florida space news and launches. - Aerospace fans couldn t ask for more than what s coming to the Space Coast this weekend: dozens of aircraft, smoke and fire from Falcon 9 s main engines, and the low roar of two solid rocket boosters helping propel an Atlas V rocket to orbit. Eyes will be fixated on the sky more than usual starting early Saturday as the Great Florida Air Show kicks off at Orlando Melbourne International Airport. Displays from the Navy Blue Angels, Air Force F-16 Viper Demo Team, and dozens more – including static displays and exhibits – will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

As the U.S. Navy s Blue Angels zoomed over the Orlando Melbourne International Airport on Friday morning in preparation for the weekend’s air shows, students from Eau Gallie High’s aviation program toured science and technology displays from Northrop Grumman, Florida Tech and Larsen Motorsports, showcasing educational opportunities designed to build a pathway for Brevard youth to enter high-paying careers in the Space Coast. The displays showed hands-on work Florida Tech students created, including a working fuel cell and a jet drag race car created for Elaine Larsen, a jet drag pilot for Larsen Motorsports.

Sugalski said she “had the honor” of going up straight up, actually with Lt. Julius Bratton on Wednesday afternoon from Orlando-Melbourne International Airport. The 40-minute flight included some barrel rolls and loops. It took them over Cape Canaveral and the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center all while hitting 7.3 Gs.
