1. He entered fire service as a volunteer firefighter at age 15
Reed entered fire service as a volunteer firefighter when he was 15 years old. He s currently captain and treasurer of the Ballplay Bend Fire Department but he ll be giving up the rank and treasurer s positions to prevent conflict of interest after being hired as chief.
2. He s a Hokes Bluff High School alum
He s a graduate of Hokes Bluff High School, Class of 1991, and earned a degree in Emergency Medical Services at Gadsden State, a Fire Science degree from Columbia Southern and is in his senior year of a Fire Administration degree program at Columbia Southern.

NEWPORT NEWS The Riverside College of Health Careers is hosting a virtual information session for those interested in careers in healthcare.
The session is free and open to the public. Login information can be found at Riverside’s website.
By attending the virtual information session, prospective students will learn how to apply to the school, receive application deadlines as well as program start dates.
In addition, attendees can learn information about the school’s new programs including a Adult Echocardiography Specialty and RN-to-BSN.

James City County police confirmed a truck driver accused of hitting a pedestrian and then leaving the scene was found dead last week.
The hit-and-run happened around 7:19 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the 8700 block of Pocahontas Trail.
Witnessed told police that the pedestrian was getting off a WATA bus when he was hit by a dump truck. The victim, a 31-year-old man from James City County, was trying to cross the street near the Dollar General when he was hit.
The truck driver left the scene and drove almost a mile away to the entrance of the Country Village Mobile Home Park. The driver got out of the truck but then got back in and drove off, according to witnesses.
Statewide COVID-19 hospitalization rates continued to edge downward this past weekend, with 1,513 people in Alabama hospitals with coronavirus on Sunday, according to Alabama Department Public Health figures reported by BamaTracker.
That s down from 1,551 hospitalized Saturday and 1,666 Friday, and it marks the continuation of a trend during recent weeks.
On Jan. 8, there were 3,014 people hospitalized, according to ADPH almost double the number reported Sunday.
Riverview Regional Medical Center spokesperson Susan Moore said the numbers of COVID patients hospitalized at the Gadsden facility had been declining for the last seven to 10 days enough so that the hospital announced it would reopen visitation today for non-COVID patients, with virus-related modifications.
