EnergyAustraliaâs decision to build a gas-powered plant in NSWâs Illawarra region has sharpened the focus on the federal governmentâs proposal to build a separate gas plant in the Hunter Valley, which could render Andrew Forrestâs planned Port Kembla generation venture unviable.
The Tallawarra B power station to be built by EnergyAustralia has been in the pipeline for about 10 years and finally got the go-ahead after deals were signed for more than $80 million of government money. It will be the countryâs first carbon-neutral power station, with green hydrogen to be part of the fuel mix, while carbon emissions from gas use will be offset.

Energy minister warns Victoria s proposed energy policy will impact jobs 03/05/2021|1min
Concerns are being raised over Victoria’s proposed emissions reduction strategy which would see hospitals, police stations and schools completely powered by renewable energy by 2025.
The state set reduction targets of 28 to 33 per cent by 2025 and net zero by 2050 – which has been met with fears it will harm jobs and drive up energy prices.
Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor warned the aggressive policy will harm blue collar jobs.
Victoria’s major coal generators also feared mismatched policies between state and federal governments will reduce electricity reliability.

QUARANTINE AND THE TRAVEL BAN
Canberra must face up to its responsibilities
The Commonwealth government can’t ignore its duty to provide effective, purpose-built quarantine facilities throughout Australia (“Shifting pandemic politics brings PM to the table”,
The Age, 1/5).
Like national defence, quarantine is ultimately a Commonwealth responsibility. We face potential aggression from foreign countries as a nation, not as individual states and territories. Any proposal to fund separate armies, navies and air forces would be laughed at as ludicrous. Defence is up to the Commonwealth. Neither in a pandemic should the states and territories have to scrabble to find money for quara

Victoria wants half of all new car sales in the state to be zero emissions vehicles by 2030 as it targets a cut in carbon emissions of as much as 50 per cent by the end of the decade.
The aggressive new interim targets for emissions reduction, including a cut of between 28 and 33 per cent by 2025, look set to add to mounting pressure on the federal government to take tougher action on climate change.
The closure of the Yallourn power station in mid-2028 will make Victoriaâs 2030 emissions target easier to meet.Â
