The early closure of Victoriaâs Yallourn power plant has underscored the severity of the economic crisis engulfing the nationâs coal-fired generators and escalated warnings that more plants soon may be forced to scale back output or shut down entirely.
Industry insiders and analysts said EnergyAustraliaâs decision to fast-track Yallournâs retirement by four years to mid-2028 is too far into the future to boost prices to support the viability of other loss-making power stations in Victoria and New South Wales.
Energy Minister Angus Taylor warns the early closure of Victoria's Yallourn coal fired power plant could lead to higher bills and more blackouts.
Energy Australia recently announced it would close the Latrobe Valley plant fours year earlier than expected in mid-2028.
The plant currently supplies up to 22 per cent of the state's electricity and eight per cent of the national market.
The plants closure will leave a gap in generation capacity of more than 1000 Megawatts.
A 350 Megawatts battery will be built as a partial replacement but the federal government has said it will step in if the company doesn't fill the void.
