Varcoe: Canada wades into Line 5 legal scrap, warns of devastating oilpatch fallout

Article content If anyone believes the struggle to shut down Line 5 only affects consumers, a new federal court filing dispels that notion, saying such a step by Michigan would have “a devastating impact” on the energy industry and economy in Western Canada. On Tuesday, the federal government unloaded a volley in the latest cross-border pipeline brawl, filing a legal brief with U.S. courts detailing why Michigan shouldn’t unilaterally shut down Enbridge’s existing line that moves oil to Central Canada. Kenney says Alberta government will table new turn-off-the-taps legislation with minor revisions

Article content Alberta Premier Jason Kenney plans to reintroduce so-called turn-off-the-taps legislation that could limit oil exports to other provinces after an existing bill came out of force last week. The Preserving Canada’s Economic Prosperity Act was the first piece of legislation proclaimed by Kenney’s UCP government in 2019 after the previous NDP government introduced it in 2018 but did not bring it into effect. As clock ticks down on Enbridge s Line 5, anxiety grows in Sarnia and Michigan

Article content CALGARY For Mike Bradley, the mayor of Sarnia, the impending shutdown of a pipeline that supplies fuel to his city’s biggest employers has been “hovering” for seven months. That anxiety has been steadily building ahead of a deadline this month imposed by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer for Enbridge Inc. to shut down its Line 5 pipeline, which crosses through Michigan, where it delivers more than half of the state’s propane needs, en route to deliver oil to Ontario, Ohio and Pennsylvania. How the global steel industry is cutting out coal

Share As backlash erupted last year in response to the Alberta government s plans to open up large swaths of the Rocky Mountain region to metallurgical coal mines, alternative plans were already afoot in the global steel-making industry. Companies have introduced technologies that could eliminate their centuries-old reliance on metallurgical coal, including plans to be entirely free of fossil fuels in just over 20 years. Photo: Shutterstock “We’re going down to zero.”  That’s what Thomas Hörnfeldt, vice president of sustainable business at the Swedish-based steel-maker SSAB, told The Narwhal of his company’s carbon emissions.  Hörnfeldt spoke to me on a video call from his office in Stockholm, a virtual backdrop of a picturesque Swedish canal flickering behind his office chair. He proudly displays a small piece of what he described as SSAB’s first fossil-fuel-free steel on his desk.
