Nuclear Energy ‘ll stabilise power supply Onu

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu says nuclear energy will stabilise the power supply in Nigeria should the country exploit to the maximum, the full benefits of peaceful nuclear energy.
Dr Onu stated this on Thursday when he declared open the Nigeria Energy Calculator 2050 (NECAL2050) stakeholders engagement in Abuja.
According to Dr Onu, when Nigeria peacefully maximises Nuclear energy, it would help build a stable power supply base and would benefit many socio-economic areas such as medicine, agriculture, education, manufacturing and overall national economic growth.

Former Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Prof Abubakar Sambo, has expressed support for the use of solar photovoltaics plants to increase electricity supply in the country.
Sambo, who spoke at a media chat and project roadmap presentation of the Ashama 200MW Solar PV Power Plant, said for Nigeria to have a significant expansion of its electricity supply, there is the absolute need for the government to consider a number of points.
The don, who is also the chairman, Minister’s Policy & Technical Advisory Committee on Environment, stated that the power sector reforms, which started with the 2005 liberalisation and 2013 privatisation, should be sustained and strengthened by ensuring that the provisions of operating licences granted to members of Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry were not violated.

BRIEF HISTORY
Electricity was first generated in Nigeria in 1866 when two
generating sets were installed to serve the Colony of Lagos. In
1951, the government of Nigeria, through an Act of Parliament,
established the Electricity Commission of Nigeria (ECN) to regulate
and operate the power supply systems in Nigeria. Subsequently, the
Niger Dam Authority (NDA) was established for the development of
the Kanji Hydroelectric Dam. In 1972, the ECN and the NDA were
merged to form the Nigerian Electric Power Authority (NEPA).
