LIMA Voters renewed a levy for Allen County Children Services on Tuesday
With all 88 precincts and absentee votes counted, 73.1% of voters have endorsed the levy, with 26.9% saying no.
The renewal is for 0.5 mills for five years for the care and placement of children.

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP Voters in Shawnee Township and Cridersville overwhelming said yes to property tax levies and income tax hikes to fully fund police departments. And Shawnee schools, which has been operating at a deficit for the last decade, will now see an additional $2.2 million per year thanks to an emergency 4.58 mill levy approved by voters Tuesday.
Tuesday was the second time in three years that the district has asked voters for new money after a 2018 emergency levy was rejected, resulting in budget cuts.
Letter: Children Services needs support of community
Allen County Children Services is asking voters to approve our current five-year, 0.5 mil renewal levy. Approval of this levy will enable us to continue to provide mandated services to our community’s abused and neglected children. This levy was first approved by the public in 1996. This levy will not raise taxes and will cost the owner of a $100,000 home, $17.50 per year.
The opioid epidemic that has hit our community over the last several years continues to plague families and children in Allen County. In 2020, our agency investigated 858 cases of abuse or neglect involving 1,236 children. It is estimated that 80 percent of families receiving agency services involve a parent using illegal drugs. The cost of removing a child from a home for safety reasons and placing the child in a foster home or residential facility has been on the rise. LIMA Tax levy renewal proposals will appear on the May 4 ballot for the Allen County Children Services and the Monroe Township Fire Department. Renewals result in no additional tax burden on residents and simply continue a tax rate established when the levy was first presented to voters.

The Allen County Children Services agency is asking voters countywide for their continued support at the ballot box on May 4 by approving a .5-mill, 5-year levy renewal. The proceeds from the levy, which amount to more than $900,000 annually, are used for the care and placement of children throughout the county.
