The USD 383 school board voted 5-2 in favor of Oliver Brown Elementary welcoming the new brown & gold color scheme and bison mascot.
Following more than 1,600 responses to an online survey late last year, the public had the final say in deciding the colors and mascot for the new school. Newly elected board president Jurdene Coleman held out for “Ollie the Owl”, and said she was saddened by the resulting polls and was joined by board member Brandy Santos.
The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of burglary and theft reports from the past week.
Among the thefts, Sheriff Shane Jager says the department is investigating the theft of about $22,000 in tools taken from an enclosed trailer at the construction site of the new Oliver Brown Elementary School in Blue Township. The incident was reported Dec. 30 and its believed the theft occurred early that morning.
Two theft reports were also filed Dec. 28 after multiple vehicles had their catalytic converters removed. The Sheriff’s Office says the first theft involved a single vehicle that had its part removed sometime between Dec. 15 and Dec. 28 in the parking lot of Frieling Auto Sales in Manhattan. A second theft theft from two vehicles in the 26000 block of Doyle Creek Road in St. Marys, is believed to have occurred prior to Christmas Day.
Pottawatomie County Commissioner Pat Weixelman
While the idea of putting in a bridge in a bridge on Junietta Road near Oliver Brown Elementary School has been around for a while, it likely won’t come to fruition anytime soon.
Speaking on KMAN’s In Focus Dec. 22, Pottawatomie County commissioner Pat Weixelman said that it’s largely a matter of how it could be funded.
“That’s something we’re going to have to address in the next year or two to try to come up with some funding and make this thing a little more toward reality. As of now there just isn’t any funding available for it,” he said.
