A Consultant Urologist Surgeon at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Prof. Nuhu Dakum has said that brain drain in the medical sector is detrimental to the development of the sector.
He stressed that medical brain drain had created loss of skilled manpower to train incoming doctors and other health care workers in the sector.
Dakum stated this while delivering a paper at the opening ceremony of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) 2021 National Executive Council meeting in Jos.
The programme is entitled “Brain Drain and its effect on Medical Education in Nigeria.“
Dakum said that brain drain in the medical sector was getting worse and detrimental to medical education.

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), yesterday, called on Nigerians to accept the COVID-19 vaccine when available in the country, saying, “The benefits of the vaccine far outweigh any perceived risks.”
The group said the information available to it showed that the vaccine was safe and that therefore people should not be scared to accept it, explaining that all hands must be on deck to fight against the disease.
In a press briefing in Jos, Professor Ken Ozoilo, the President of MDCAN, said they had observed “with dismay the failure of many Nigerians to adhere to the non-pharmaceutical methods of COVID-19 prevention as espoused by relevant bodies, including the NCDC and the presidential task force.

The association announced his death in a statement signed by A.A. Uche, MDCAN secretary, FMC Makurdi, on Monday.
Uche said the physician died on Saturday of COVID-19 complications.
“It is with a heavy heart but total submission to God that we the members of MDCAN FMC Makurdi regret to announce the death of Dr Anweh Damian, consultant Family Physician. The sad event occurred on Saturday 18th December, 2020 following covid 19 complication. We pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest,” he said.

He said Damian was a special grade one consultant and consultant family physician at the federal medical centre.
