The latest COVID-19 word from county health officials has more good news than most.
âBetter days are here,â county Board of Supervisors Chairperson Alfredo Pedroza said during a meeting break after hearing an update on Tuesday. âItâs no longer a hope. Itâs a reality.â
Napa County remains firmly entrenched in orange on Californiaâs color-coded rating systems. But it is inching toward the top-ranked yellow tier.

Among other things, a yellow ranking would allow wineries and breweries to double indoor capacity, to 50% or 200 people, whichever is fewer. It would allow fitness centers to double indoor capacity from 25% to 50%.
Some residents still say that propane cannons in vineyards make too much noise, but there are fewer complaints being lodged with Napa County since the county passed standards in 2019.
The âboomsâ from the cannons in some south Napa County vineyards during the growing season are supposed to keep birds from feasting on valuable wine grapes. They also bother some residents.
âThere comes a point where it s a quality-of-life issue here that is happening,â said county Supervisor Belia Ramos, who lives in American Canyon.

BENICIA A Benicia man and lifelong cyclist is one of nine Bay Area individuals named as a 2021 Bike Champion of the Year.
But Cande Medrano, 71, thought his cycling days were done in his 50s after surgery for spinal stenosis.
However, therapy and time have allowed Medrano to get back onto his bike, and in 2020, he logged more than 14,000 miles, according to a statement released by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission through its Bay Area Bike to Wherever Days program.
Napa County is sounding the alarm that proposed California wildfire hazard area rule changes could trigger costly road improvements for rural home construction and even minor winery expansions.
The state Board of Forestry and Fire Protection is revising its Fire Safe Regulations that locally affect much of the rural county outside of the Napa Valley floor. It recently released a draft of the changes and could adopt them in June.
Question marks remain. County officials said the proposed rule revisions would apply to use permit changes that increase âdensity or intensityâ in wildfire hazard areas, but that this term might be defined in a number of ways.
