A former city police officer, and current chief of Calgary police, has taken over the mantle of Alberta’s top cop.
During a virtual meeting of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP) on Thursday, Mark Neufeld was named the new president and officially began his term the same day, taking over the role from Edmonton police Chief Dale McFee. Neufeld will remain in the role for two years.

The Edmonton Police Service will be the first police agency in Alberta to launch the HealthIM app aimed at improving responses to calls related to mental health.(Edmonton Police Service)
The Alberta government is investing $789,000 to pilot an app designed to help front-line police officers across the province better respond to mental health crisis calls following a proven track record in other parts of the country.
The HealthIM app is a digital, subscription-based risk-assessment tool developed several years ago by University of Waterloo researchers that s meant to help police screen, de-escalate and track mental health-related calls.
Assisting police to respond to mental health crisis
Alberta’s government is providing more than $789,000 in funding to support the provincial implementation of a new digital tool to improve police interactions when responding to mental health emergencies.

Used in multiple Canadian jurisdictions, the HealthIM system is a digital platform that provides police officers with the onsite tools and information they need to improve safety for all involved. It can help in assessing whether a person should be transported to a designated facility for evaluation and connect the individual to community service providers if further intervention is not warranted.
