Trial of man for drug trafficking, weapons charges will proceed Poll Yes, this is enough A man facing drug trafficking charges in connection with a provincial police task force investigation has been committed to stand trial following a brief preliminary hearing on Tuesday. Shane Peters was charged Oct. 9, 2019, according to the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team, following a search of two homes in Medicine Hat. Nearly 350 grams of cocaine were seized at the conclusion of the investigation that was launched the month prior, according to police. ALERT officers also seized more than $37,000 in cash and a number of knives and brass knuckles.

CALGARY A 30-year-old Quebec man faces charges following a human trafficking investigation in Calgary. According to the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), Firas Azzaz of Laval, Que. allegedly forced a woman into the sex trade and sexually exploited her for his own personal gain. This was an abhorrent situation where the victim was being forced to perform sexual acts against her will, said Staff Sgt. Colleen Bowers of the ALERT human trafficking counter exploitation unit. The silver lining is that she escaped, but the grim reality is that many women are trapped in this life. The victim first came forward to police in September 2020 and, following an investigation by the Calgary Police Service and ALERT, Azzaz was arrested nearly eight months later at a Calgary hotel on April 28.

The position is part of a larger federally-funded framework working in tandem with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) and REACH Edmonton to combat human trafficking in the province.

Two Charged After Drug Investigation Downtown

On April 28, the Wood Buffalo RCMP Drug Section in collaboration with the Crime Reduction Unit arrested 33-year-old Bruce Thompson and 32-year-old Pearl Edna Deltess. Suspected Fentanyl, Percocet pills, and a quantity of Canadian Currency were seized as a result of the investigation. Thompson has since been charged with two counts of trafficking, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, and failure to comply with conditions of release. Deltess has also been charged with two counts of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.
