Since June 24, EFRS have responded to 40 cases of animals or people locked in vehicles. Eighteen of those calls were for people, 22 were for animals. On Monday alone, rescue crews were called 13 times for such incidents; nine for animals, and four for people. RECORD-BREAKING POWER CONSUMPTION According to Alberta s power grid operator, Monday and Tuesday saw record summertime highs for power consumption in the province. Tuesday s power use in the province led the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) declare an energy emergency alert. The 11,721 MW used in Alberta on Tuesday was eight MW shy of the all-time record which was set in the wintertime.

Alberta has faced days of record-breaking power usage and while no major power outages have happened yet, officials say the continued heat means they are still a possibility.

On Wednesday afternoon usage hovered for hours near the all-time record of 11,729 megawatts but didn’t cross into record-breaking levels.
Kirstine Hull, Epcor’s director of transmission, said the company has staff monitoring power usage in real time 24 hours a day to make adjustments when necessary to keep the lights on.

The city of Calgary broke a daily temperature record for the second straight day as temperatures soared to 35.4 C as of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, and energy usage was predicted to surpass the record set Monday.
According to the Environment and Climate Change Canada website, the last record for June 29 in Calgary was set in 1896, at 34.4 C. The forecast high was 36 C on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to continue to rise into the early evening.

When we knew it was going to be so hot, we thought that we d reach out to all of our associates, the Westin hotel s Joumana Ghandour told CTV News Edmonton, and we offered for them to come stay at the hotel for a very special rate. Ghandour said so far five of the Westin s staff members in Edmonton have taken advantage of the hotel s air conditioned rooms thanks to the discounted rate.
