Alberta s struggling restaurants and bars call for more support after new health measures close patios

To keep their eateries running, many restaurateurs in Alberta sunk money into building or improving their outdoor spaces, only to see them shut down yet again under the latest COVID-19 restrictions

Gut wrenching : Red Deer restaurants brace for third COVID-19 shutdown

“It is their bread and butter.” Many Red Deer restaurant owners spent thousands of dollars on patio extensions in mid-April after the province banned indoor dining but allowed patrons to dine outside. “A lot of us have spent the last three weeks spending capital on patio extensions, and going through the route of dealing with our municipalities on how to get these patios approved,” said Bo’s Bar and Stage owner Brennen Wowk. “To now do all that work to be just shut down three weeks later is kind of gut wrenching.” Wowk, also a member of the Alberta Hospitality Association, points to provinces like Ontario who have provided locked-down restaurants with additional supports like utility abatement. He said the association has asked the province for similar relief.

Battered by COVID shut-downs, restaurants and bars despair over patio closures

“This is impacting us drastically. We’re going to have to shut down our downtown location.” On Tuesday, Premier Jason Kenney announced new measures to halt a surging third wave of COVID-19 infections that include closing outdoor patios, leaving bars and restaurants with the sole fallback of takeout and delivery for at least the next three weeks. With the expected dramatic acceleration of vaccinations this month, “my hope is if people really get the message, this can be the short-term, last-time set of health restrictions and those businesses can get back hopefully to a decent summer,” Kenney said during a news conference Wednesday.
