By: Emily Winstanley Almost no one, bar a few forward-thinking epidemiologists, could have predicted the events of 2020. But if you take a look at some of the more long-range predictions for this year, things have gone even more off-piste than we could have imagined. For a long time, 2020 was used as a date so far off in the future, that anything might be possible.
Emily Winstanley s been looking at what some prognosticators had promised for this year.
Altitude Angel, Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) technology provider, Inmarsat, global mobile satellite communications, and A-techSYN, manufacturer of next generation Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), have announced the successful conclusion of drone test flights using their jointly developed Pop-Up UTM platform.
The Pop-Up UTM platform delivers advanced Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flight tracking for UAVs. It enables drones to be safely integrated into controlled airspace and ensures they are visible to – and can be kept distant from – other air traffic.
During October and November 2020, an A-TechSYN CGT50 VTOL UAV – using the compact Cobham AVIATOR 200 satcom solution integrated with UAV Navigation’s POLAR Attitude & Heading Reference System (AHRS) – flew numerous BVLOS flights, connected and tracked using Inmarsat’s global L-band satellite network. The fully autonomous flights were initiated and monitored by a pilot 60km from the take-off and landing area nea

A technology platform for managing drone traffic has been successfully trialled on a number of test flights that took place near the Turkish capital of Ankara.
The Pop-Up UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) system has been developed by the UK’s Altitude Angel in partnership with satcom giant Inmarsat and A-TechSYN, an Irish UAV company headquartered in County Clare.
During testing throughout October and November 2020, an A-TechSYN CGT50 VTOL UAV flew a series of autonomous BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) flights, which were initiated and monitored by a pilot 60km away from the take-off and landing area.

READING will soon be part of a demonstration on the future of drone technology for medical and emergency responses. Telecommunications giant BT is joining a project backed by the government s industrial strategy to revolutionise the way people and services use drones by making use of the UK s first commercial drone corridor, which is located in Reading. The company announced today (December 15) that together with Altitude Angel and a number of UK tech start-ups, it has been selected to deliver Project XCelerate – a key Future Flight Challenge which will demonstrate use of the airspace in Reading s skies. Next summer, the project will conduct flight trials along the 8km-long corridor to show how drones can operate safely in the same airspace as manned aviation.
