RALEIGH, N.C. Supporters of transgender students are praising a change that will mean North Carolina public schools switch from using the legal name of students to their preferred name. The state Department of Public Instruction notified school districts Friday that it’s updating the PowerSchool student information system to add a preferred name field that will now be used on most records. .
First, some background
In February 2016, the Charlotte City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in public accommodations. Before the ordinance took effect, a special session of the N.C. General Assembly was called to respond. On March 23, the legislature passed House Bill 2 and Gov. Pat McCrory signed it into law that night.
The bill stated that state law pre-empted any local anti-discrimination ordinances and, according to a New York Times article at the time, “required schools and other public facilities with single-gender washrooms to only allow people of the corresponding sex as listed on their birth certificate to use them.”

A lesbian couple in North Carolina are making headlines after a venue refused to host their wedding because they are gay.
Brianna May and Kasey Mayfield were hoping to have their dream wedding at The Warehouse on Ivy, a popular event space in downtown Winston-Salem, but their hopes were shattered when they received an upsetting email from the venue.
“As we would love to have you at our venue, unfortunately we do not host same sex marriage ceremonies,” the email read, according to a screenshot shared by May on Facebook. “We do appreciate you considering us.”
