Giannoulias reports war chest nearly three times the size of three secretary of state rivals combined

Ashlee Rezin Garcia; Rich Hein/Sun-Times file Less than a year out from the Democratic primary, former state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias reported having roughly $3 million in the bank for his bid to succeed outgoing Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White five times as much as City Clerk Anna Valencia, whose own fund raising puts her second in the battle for campaign contributions. Giannoulias reported raising $859,312.64 during the quarter that ended June 30, giving him $2,915,761.69 cash on hand, according to a campaign finance report filed Thursday, hours before the deadline. Since the end of June, the former U.S. Senate candidate reported raising another $91,900 giving him a little over $3 million in his campaign coffers in what’s expected to be a hotly contested race.

Legislative Inspector General Carol Pope resigns, citing lawmakers failure to pass real ethics reform

Peter Hancock/Capitol News Illinois file photo The latest watchdog for the Illinois state Legislature offered her resignation on Wednesday, telling lawmakers their failure to pass meaningful ethics reform shows “true ethics reform is not a priority.” Complaining her job is “essentially a paper tiger,” Legislative Inspector General Carol Pope sent her letter of resignation to members of the Legislative Ethics Commission, offering to step down immediately, stay on while they find a replacement or remain until her term ends in December. “When I took this job as the Legislative Inspector General, I thought I might be able to make a difference working from the inside,” Pope wrote in her resignation letter.
