Commonwealth s Attorney Launches Unit to Investigate Wrongful Convictions

March 2, 2021 at 3:45pm Arlington’s top prosecutor has launched a Conviction Review Unit to investigate “claims of innocence and wrongful convictions.” The unit will look into claims of wrongful convictions, including those who were convicted at trial of murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and other felonies. Just last year, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law that actually expands the pool of defendants who are eligible to challenge convictions. Established within the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office for Arlington County and Falls Church, the unit will also be responsible for litigating motions for post-conviction DNA testing and responding to Freedom of Information Act requests.

Crash Takes Out Utility Pole, Causes Extended Road Closure in EFC

February 26, 2021 at 2:30pm A crash in the East Falls Church neighborhood last night closed a portion of busy Lee Highway for an extended period of time. The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. Thursday, a couple of blocks east of the Lee Highway and Washington Blvd intersection. A driver in a sedan appears to have run off the road, smashed through a brick wall and damaged a utility pole. “Upon arrival, officers located a single vehicle crash into a utility pole,” Arlington County Police Department spokeswoman Ashley Savage tells ARLnow. The driver was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Lee Highway was closed between Washington Boulevard and N. Sycamore Street and Dominion Energy responded to complete repairs.”

Arlington Police Warn of Increase in Business Burglaries

These are just three of the local businesses burglarized among the 21 commercial burglaries investigated by Arlington County police so far this year. ACPD confirmed today what was anecdotally evident: suchburglaries have been on the rise. From a police press release: The Arlington County Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit is investigating an increase in overnight commercial burglaries targeting cash-based businesses. Since the start of the year, detectives have investigated 21 reports of commercial burglaries in the County with similar methods of theft. Investigators believe that some of these cases are linked but not all are committed by the same suspects. Similar cases have been reported in neighboring jurisdictions and detectives are working collaboratively with our regional law enforcement partners to identify and apprehend those responsible.
