COVID-19 vaccines decreasing statewide — how about in Ashland County?

Ashland Times Gazette ASHLAND As COVID-19 vaccine rates have steadily decreased in Ohio, Ashland County health officials say they are seeing a slower decline in vaccination rates.  Vaccination rates nationwide have decreased as more people are getting the shots, though there s a swath of the population that is hesitant to get COVID vaccines. Some of that hesitation came from the pause of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after reports of six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot was found in individuals who took it.  Despite the pause, people have been eager to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at local COVID-19 clinics, said Mark Rafeld, director of the Ashland County Emergency Management Agency.

Local health departments take targeted approach to reach unvaccinated

Local hospitals and health departments are changing tactics to reach those still unvaccinated. “The days of the large COVID clinics are coming to an end,” said Nick Cascarelli, Wayne County health commissioner. As fewer people book vaccine appointments, health departments in Ashland, Wayne, and Holmes counties are transitioning to more walk-in clinics and pulling back on vaccine orders.  Supply is no longer the issue to getting more people vaccinated. “It’s not an availability issue,” said Shirley Bixby, nursing director at the Ashland County Health Department. “I think the entire state is seeing saturation” of vaccine doses. Local health agencies also are holding private clinics for businesses to vaccinate their employees and reaching out to schools to administer vaccines to students as younger age groups become eligible.

COVID Campus Communication

Northland College Spring Break Travel In general, the College discourages students, faculty, and staff from traveling during spring break (April 24 – May 2). Staying on campus or close to Ashland will help to limit transmission of the COVID-19 virus, increasing the chances that our community can stay safe and successfully complete the academic year. If you must travel, students should complete a COVID-19 travel request if heading beyond a 40-mile radius of Ashland. Each request is evaluated by a team for risk assessment and appropriate follow-up is communicated to each student. It is crucial that students submit travel requests in advance, so that required protocols can be determined and communicated. Submitting a travel request does not mean travel has been approved. Self-quarantine, quarantine, or isolation periods may interfere with May Term courses scheduled to start May 3. Not all courses may be able to accommodate physical absences from classes.
