The Intellectual Property High Court in Kuala Lumpur has declared that the sale, offer for sale, distribution and/or supply of TV boxes or illicit streaming devices (ISDs) that can provide unauthorised access to copyrighted works constitutes copyright infringement under the Copyright Act 1987, according to Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd.
The action in the Intellectual Property High Court was brought by Measat Broadcast Networks Sdn Bhd, the service provider for Astro, against a seller of ISDs preloaded with applications which act as gateways to websites or content servers streaming pirated content.
’s collaboration with The Walt Disney Company to offer Disney+ Hotstar could help improve average revenue per user (Arpu) for the pay-TV operator.
With the appointment of Astro as the official distributor of the streaming services, Disney+ Hotstar will also be made available to its Movies Pack customers for an additional RM5 per month.
Its non-Movies Pack subscribers, meanwhile, may access the streaming service via other bundles to be made known later.
This follows news last week that Disney was said to be considering shutting down the majority of its TV channels in South-East Asia and Hong Kong later this year as it plans to shift its focus to the direct-to-customer business model.

This confirms a report by theedgemarkets.com yesterday that Disney+ is coming to Malaysia via its own streaming platform and also through working relationships with platforms such as Astro.
In statements today, the companies said viewers can enjoy content from several providers including Disney, Pixar, Marvel,
Star Wars, the
National Geographic as well as a wide array of general entertainment series and films for young adult audiences, and home-grown and Asian hits through the streaming service.
KUALA LUMPUR (May 3): Hot on the heels of news that Disney is pulling out its TV channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, including Malaysia, market talk is rife that Disney+ is coming to Malaysian shores very soon and its entry here will also see the streaming provider having working relationships with platforms such as Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM).
When asked if TM is going to partner with Disney for the latter’s streaming service, the group replied: “We applaud Disney’s decision to move into the OTT (over-the-top) space. We live in a time that high quality broadband has enabled us to access a wide, rich, universe of entertainment that is ever-expanding.
