Narrandera Shire Council
Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) NSW are hosting a forum for Narrandera Shire Council on Saturday 15 May from 2pm to 5pm at Narrandera Golf Club, Racecourse Rd, Narrandera.
The forum aims to encourage, inform, and support women to stand for election across the state in this year’s Local Government Elections.
Across NSW, women support their communities in a variety of ways. From running school P&C’s, building and expanding local businesses, overseeing local sports competitions, community campaigns, coordinating drought and bushfire relief for neighbours and local businesses. These leadership skills are highly transferable to local government, where your skills can assist and benefit your entire community.

The Australian Local Government Association has welcomed the announcement by the Federal Government of investments in major projects totaling more than $10 billion and called for similar commitments in local government infrastructure.
The new commitments, expected to create more than 23,000 direct and indirect jobs, form part of the Commonwealth’s 10-year land transport and infrastructure plan first announced in the 2020-21 Federal Budget.
“These key projects will make our roads safer and less congested, and reduce pinch points on important freight links but we need to see more investment across the nation in local infrastructure to complement these initiatives,” ALGA President Linda Scott said today.
Tweed Shire Council
Council has declared a housing emergency in the Tweed due to a lack of availability and affordability.
At its meeting on Thursday 15 April 2021, Council resolved to write to the Federal and State governments asking both to explore further opportunities for additional social and affordable housing in the Tweed.
Mayor of Tweed Chris Cherry said a growing number of residents were now finding they could no longer afford to live in the Shire.
“Council highlighted the lack of affordable and available housing in the Tweed back in 2018. COVID has accentuated this and what we are now seeing is a marked acceleration in this trend caused by people moving from cities and buying properties in the Tweed,” she said.

Female councillors face a barrage of gendered abuse and harassment from their council colleagues, politicians and the public, including bullying, verbal abuse and intimidation.
They say the toxic workplace culture inside the federal and NSW parliaments is replicated at a local level and is a disincentive for women to enter local government.
