Professor Arthur Christopoulos elected as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, and makes his mum cry

When Professor Arthur Christopoulos, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University, told his mother he was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, she asked, “Son, what does this mean?” He had to explain that it was like the “Hall of Fame” for academia, and the former seamstress from Messinia cried for the right reasons. She was not the only woman to be moved by his achievements. “Today, the announcement was made,” he told Neos Kosmos. “That’s an extra present for my wife because it is her birthday, and I wouldn’t be here without her. We met as PhD students in pharmacology, did our post doc together in the USA, she now works at my faculty and we’ve been together for 26 years.”

World leading ANU scientists recognised among nation s best

World leading ANU scientists recognised among nation s best 25 May 2021 A plant biologist and geochemist from The Australian National University (ANU) have both been recognised for their outstanding contributions to their fields of science. Professor Dorrit Jacob s work is diverse, covering everything from how certain molluscs produce pearls, to how diamonds form deep inside the Earth s mantle. She s a pioneer in the emerging field of biomineralisation - or how living organisms produce minerals - and recently joined ANU as the first female director of the Research School of Earth Sciences. Professor Barry Pogson s innovative research has helped us better understand how plant cells communicate with each other about changes in their environment, paving the way for more drought resilient crops.

Twenty-two Australians recognised among our nation s most distinguished scientists

May 25, 2021 New Fellows The Australian inventor of 3D-printed bone substitutes is among a group of scientists being acknowledged today for their outstanding contributions to science. Professor Hala Zreiqat and her team developed world-first techniques for 3D-printing strong, bio-compatible ceramic materials that can bond to and help repair bones. This is leading to the development of new orthopaedic implants, including the world’s first synthetic material for healing large areas of bone while supporting weight. The Jordanian migrant who came to Australia in 1991 to pursue her dream of medical research is one of 22 scientists newly elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.

Harnessing next generation sequencing to detect SARS-CoV-2

Credit: Peter Duchek Researchers at the Vienna BioCenter designed a testing protocol for SARS-CoV-2 that can process tens of thousands of samples in less than 48 hours. The method, called SARSeq, is published in the journal Nature Communications and could be adapted to many more pathogens. The COVID-19 pandemic has lasted more than a year and continues to impact our lives tremendously. Although some countries have launched speedy vaccination campaigns, many still await large-scale immunization schemes and effective antiviral therapies - before that happens, the world urgently needs to regain a semblance of normalcy. One way to bring us closer to that point is massive parallel testing. Molecular tests that detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 have become the best way to isolate positive cases and contain the spread of the virus. Several methods have come forward, some that detect viral proteins from nasopharyngeal swabs (such as antigen tests), and some that detect the presence of v
