Cosmos Briefing: Science vs law - Cosmos Magazine

Cosmos Briefing: Science v law Experts discuss whether scientific evidence is properly considered in our courts. Australia’s legal system should reconsider how seriously it regards scientific evidence, according to today’s Cosmos Briefing. Recent genetic evidence has prompted dozens of eminent Australian scientists to petition for Kathleen Folbigg’s pardon, raising questions about the complicated relationship between science and the law. Gary Edmond, a law professor at the University of NSW; Anna-Maria Arabia, chief executive of the Australian Academy of Science; and Richard O’Brien, an endocrinology professor at the University of Melbourne and frequent expert witness, came together to discuss this topic.

Physicists Just Made The Smallest Gravitational Field Measurement Ever

Physicists Just Made The Smallest Gravitational Field Measurement Ever 10 MARCH 2021 The tiny gravitational field between two 90-milligram spheres of gold has just been measured for the first time. This makes it officially the smallest gravitational field ever successfully measured - an achievement that could open the door to probing gravitational interactions in the quantum realm.   There s a big problem with the mathematics we use to describe the Universe; in particular, the way gravity behaves. Unlike the other three fundamental forces in the Universe - weak, strong and electromagnetic - gravity can t be described with the standard model of physics. Einstein s theory of general relativity is the model we use to describe and predict gravitational interactions, and it works beautifully in most contexts. However, when we get down to quantum scales, general relativity breaks down, and quantum mechanics takes over. Reconciling the two models has so far proven very difficult.

Molecular geneticist recognised in prestigious Australian Academy of Science Awards

Monash University An internationally renowned Monash researcher, whose work could change the way high blood pressure is treated, has been awarded the 2021 Gottschalk Medal by the Australian Academy of Science. Associate Professor Francine Marques was awarded the Gottschalk Medal for her work on high blood pressure. The Gottschalk Medal honours the contributions to the medical sciences by the late Dr A. Gottschalk FAA. About a third of Australians older than 18 have high blood pressure, with the incidence increasing with age. The blood pressure of most of these patients remains uncontrolled due to lack of treatment or poor response to currently available therapies. This is because often they don’t know they have the condition, which is also known a ‘a silent killer’ because of the lack of symptoms.
