Barrumbi Kids from local studios Tamarind Tree Pictures and Ambience Entertainment. Set to premiere in 2022, the 10 x 30-minute live-actioner stars two kids growing up in a remote community who learn what it means to live in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultures through their everyday adventures. Barrumbi Kids is based on a same-name tween-skewing book series by Australian author Leonie Norrington. Tamarind’s Danielle MacLean ( Grace Beside Me), Ambience’s Monica O’Brien ( Drop Dead Weird) and freelance creator Julia Morris ( Kundirri The Life) are producing the series together, with Grant Brown, Deb Brown and Ismail Khan (pictured left to right) on board as directors.

So it’s no surprise the pre-school television sensation has everyone claiming a small part of it. But we were taken aback when the federal communications minister, Paul Fletcher, made Bluey part of his budget announcement when neither the program nor the ABC received additional funding on Tuesday night.

SBS got $30m, newswire Australian Associated Press received $15m, community broadcasting got $8m and the media regulator secured $4.2m. According to the forward estimates in the 2021-22 budget, the ABC’s indexation pause is set to end next year, but a tied-funding grant of $14m for local and regional news may not be renewed, leaving a potential shortfall of $10.2m in operational funding.
