Australia s proposed anti-corruption commission creates retrograde system, says lobby group

Australia s proposed anti-corruption commission creates retrograde system, says lobby group Christopher Knuas © Provided by The Guardian Photograph: Casimiro/Alamy The federal government’s draft anti-corruption commission legislation lacks any credibility, and would create a weak, ineffective body that would actually degrade part of Australia’s existing integrity framework, Transparency International has warned. Prior to releasing the draft legislation, the proposed model was already subject to scathing criticism, particularly for its lack of public hearings, the high threshold it requires to investigate matters, its inability to act directly on public tip-offs, and the favourable way it treats politicians and public servants compared to law enforcement officials.

Cash for visa inquiry finalised just 15 days after interviewing complainant

Last modified on Sat 16 Jan 2021 14.02 EST The Department of Home Affairs finalised an internal investigation into allegations of “cash for visas” just 15 days after interviewing the complainant and receiving a recording of a detainee discussing a $50,000 payment for a visa. Department officials interviewed the complainant, Nauroze Anees, in April and obtained the recording, after questions were raised about why an initial investigation had concluded there was no evidence of a “cash for visas” scam without talking directly to Anees first. When he was detained on Christmas Island in 2019, Anees said that a fellow detainee, whose visa had been cancelled on character grounds due to his conviction for drug trafficking, claimed he would bribe departmental officials to ensure his release. Anees detailed the claims in an online blog post.
