During the so-called status quo transition period, legislation known as the Dublin Regulation has given the UK the power to transfer refugees and migrants back to the EU country in which they arrived. The system is designed to ensure an individual cannot apply for asylum multiple times across different countries. At the end of the 31 December Brexit transition period, the UK will no longer be able to return asylum seekers who have passed through other EU countries.
