SYDNEY, May 20 (Reuters) - Australia’s jobless rate fell for a sixth consecutive month in April to the lowest in a year despite a shocking drop in employment as fewer people went looking for work, data on Thursday showed.
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed a decline of 30,600 jobs in April, confounding economists’ expectations for a 15,000 increase.
Unemployment eased to 5.5%, the lowest since April 2020 while the participation rate declined 3 percentage points to 66%. (Reporting by Swati Pandey; Editing by Jacqueline Wong)

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has jumped on the latest labour force figures that show the unemployment rate has fallen for a sixth consecutive month to 5.5 per cent.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics revised up the jobless rate for March to 5.7 per cent from 5.6 per cent. Unemployment has fallen to its lowest level in seven years, and we have seen youth unemployment fall to its lowest level in 12 years, Mr Frydenberg told reporters in Hobart on Thursday.
He said last week s budget was aimed at locking in the recovery and creating more jobs.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, unemployment rate in the country was at 5.5% in April compared to the expected 5.6%. However, the employment change reading missed the estimates by coming in at -30.6k compared to the forecasted 15.0k. The figure is also significantly lower from 70.7k in March.
