Labor MP calls for NZ-style wellbeing budget

Damage to the wellbeing of Australians wrought by COVID-19 should prompt a reassessment of key national priorities and the metrics used to measure government policies, Labor MP Peta Murphy says.
Joining calls for Australia to follow countries such as New Zealand in releasing an annual wellbeing budget , the Dunkley MP says the post-pandemic recovery should take account of efforts to make Australians enjoy not only economic prosperity, but also a strengthened society.

In a new essay for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, she says policymakers should change the goal – and suggests that a quadruple bottom-line approach to measuring national wellbeing could be adopted. It would measure the economy, society, the environment and democracy.
