Cannibal mice threaten Sydney homes

Cannibal mice threaten Sydney homes Bloomberg A plague of mice attacking parts of Australia is turning into a horror story, with the rodents threatening to invade Sydney, reports of the vermin eating their own and the farming industry being thrown into turmoil. Millions of mice have swarmed schools, homes and hospitals in the eastern states of New South Wales and Queensland, wreaking havoc and leaving entire towns suffocating from a lingering pungent odor. Now there are reports of them munching on the remains of dead rodents and even predictions that they could reach Sydney in a matter of weeks, riding on freight trucks and food crates.

Australia mouse plague: Millions of mice are swarming NSW towns Now, there s a plan to end the plague with poison

Mouse plague in Queensland and New South Wales

CSIRO Parts of Queensland and New South Wales have seen a rise in mouse numbers due to highly favourable climatic conditions, giving mice optimal conditions to breed. CSIRO’s mouse research aims to provide better solutions for controlling an increasing prevalence of mice in Australian grain-growing regions, supporting Australian businesses, families and communities. In May 2021, new research investment by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), led by CSIRO, has enabled evidence-based increases to zinc phosphide (ZnP) mouse baits that will help grain growers battling above-average mouse numbers in eastern Australia. CSIRO researcher and leading mouse expert, Mr Steve Henry, comments on the mouse plague:

Millions of mice are swarming Australian towns Now there s a plan to end the plague with poison

The only good mouse is a dead mouse, Australia s Deputy Prime Minister declared this week, as New South Wales stepped up its war on mice with a plan to poison the plague infesting large parts of the state. For months, mice have ravaged fields and infested homes in eastern Australia, from the Victoria border in the south all the way to the country s northern state of Queensland, causing millions of dollars of damage to crops and machinery. As winter approaches, the hungry rodents are even seeking shelter inside people s houses, according to professional cleaner Sue Hodge. In the small town of Canowindra, a four-hour drive west of Sydney, Hodge spends her days disposing of dead mice from traps in her clients homes. She cleans mouse excrement out of people s kitchens, children s rooms, and even their beds.
