WELLINGTON, May 17 (Xinhua) New Zealand s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison will visit New Zealand for the annual Australia-New Zealand Leaders Meeting on May 30-31.
Morrison and his wife will arrive in Queenstown on May 30 and the talks will take place on the next day, Ardern said in a statement. I m looking forward to welcoming Prime Minister Morrison back to New Zealand following a difficult year for both our countries through the pandemic, Ardern said.

Morrison s visit to New Zealand will be his first since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The last time the pair shared a podium was in February 2020 in Sydney, where Ardern delivered a stern message to Australia about deportations.
Morrison said in a statement he looked forward to the trip and described it as fitting that his first visit overseas was to New Zealand. Australia and New Zealand are family - and we share deep historical bonds of friendship, trust and the ANZAC spirit, Morrison said. Both Australia and New Zealand have been world leaders in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and this visit is a great illustration of the Trans-Tasman Safe Travel Zone in action.

A year on from Canberra calling for an independent inquiry into the origins of COVID-19 and Beijing’s subsequent punishing of Australia via economic coercion, Australia has boldened its position by ripping up Australian state agreements with China and threatening to end Chinese ownership of critical infrastructure in Australia.
Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne announced last month that the Victorian state government’s deals with China, which included a 2018 memorandum of understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative were “inconsistent with Australia’s foreign policy or adverse to our foreign relations” and were therefore terminated.
Chinese officials said the decision was “provocative” and would have serious repercussions.
