Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. says it has reached a three-year agreement with Facebook under which the publisher will provide news and information to the social media giant’s Facebook News product.
The move follows Australia’s recent historic move to approve a law that would force social media and tech giants to pay publishers for news on independently set terms unless they can agree their own deals directly.

Facebook strongly resisted the legislation and, for a little over a week, prevented Australian netizens from sharing news on its platform. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that Facebook had unfriended the country. Facebook ceased hostilities after last minute negotiations between Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Australia’s finance minister Josh Frydenberg introduced a higher degree of flexibility into the legislation.

News Corp has become the biggest outlet to secure a deal with Facebook, under which the news business will be paid to provide content to the platform’s Facebook News product in Australia.
Mumbrella understands Nine Entertainment Co has also signed a letter of intent with the social media business, but it would not comment, only confirming that it continues to have “constructive and fruitful discussions with Facebook”.
“When we have anything to announce we will do so to the ASX, as is appropriate,” a spokesperson continued, mirroring Nine’s approach to its Google letter of intent, which the business has still not formally announced.
News Corp’s US operation, which publishes titles including the Wall Street Journal, struck a three-year Facebook News deal in October 2019.
Robert Thomson, News Corp’s chief executive, revealed earlier this month that the publisher was “haggling” with Facebook over deals in both Australia and the UK. No deal between Facebook and News UK – which publishes the Sun and Times titles – has yet been announced.
Facebook News is a tab that has been available to users in the US since 2019. It launched in the UK this year, will launch in Germany in May, and is expected to go live in Australia later. Participating publishers have agreed multi-year contracts with Facebook to make their content available on the tab.
