(Sydney) – Responding to the decision of US President Joe Biden’s administration to temporarily suspend arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a coalition of civil society groups is calling on the Australian government to follow his lead.
The Australian Arms Control Coalition (AACC) is urging the Australian government to end the export of military goods to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as long as there is an overriding risk that such weapons will be used to commit or facilitate violations of International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, or other serious crimes against civilians, including children.
Australia’s wake-up call on war crimes
27 November 2020By Asymmetrical Haircuts, for JusticeInfo.net
Execution of prisoners, a “blooding” practice where subordinates are ordered to kill out-of-action enemy combatants, a system of covering up war crimes, and “collective blindness” of the army hierarchy: the Brereton inquiry into alleged war crimes by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan has shaken Australia. A special prosecutor will soon be appointed in Australia to handle the matter. Will the Australian military break the code of silence? Will the country decide to set up a national war crimes unit? Are there implications for other Western armies, or for the International Criminal Court? Our partners at Asymmetrical Haircuts talk to Rawan Arraf, the director of the Australian Centre for International Justice.

A former New South Wales magistrate who once served as a war crimes prosecutor at The Hague says those higher up the Army s chain of command must be investigated over alleged unlawful killings in Afghanistan.
Graham Blewitt has told the ABC securing convictions over the disturbing findings of last year s Brereton inquiry would not be easy because Australian police did not currently have the appropriate expertise.
