By the year 2030, it is anticipated thousands of people will be employed in the renewable hydrogen industry in Gladstone and CQ, and exports generating billions of dollars will flow through Queenslandâs biggest and busiest multi-commodity port.
Global hydrogen heavyweight, Japanâs Sumitomo Corporation, has partnered with Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC), Gladstone Regional Council (GRC), CQ University (CQU) and the Australian Gas Industry Group AGIG to develop Australiaâs, and the worldâs first hydrogen ecosystem. Engineering giant Siemens says Andrew Forrestâs vision of a green hydrogen power station is well within reach and has backed his claim that such a facility will run more efficiently at a large scale.
Siemens Energyâs boss in the Australia-Pacific region, Michael Bielinski, said the mining billionaire was right in arguing that a 650 megawatt cap would force him to build a less efficient and less technologically advanced plant.

Hydrogen Park Gladstone will be an Australian first, delivering up to 10 per cent renewable hydrogen into the gas network to feed about 770 customers. The Palaszczuk government has invested $1.7 million into the project, Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Minister Mick de Brenni said, to drive the hydrogen industry forward and create highly skilled jobs in regional Queensland. The Hydrogen Park Gladstone project will be the first in Australia to blend renewable hydrogen into an entire city gas network for residential, commercial and industrial customers, he said.
