The Australian network that aired a widely criticised report on 501 deportees has hit back, with the reporter at the centre of the storm saying that Kiwis responded with venom .

National began the week with a call for an inquiry into the Valentine s Day cluster and party leader Judith Collins had a point when she said testing, contact tracing and communications needed to be looked into.
The cluster caused a three-day Auckland lockdown followed by a seven-day lockdown, which Collins said had cost the economy half a billion dollars.
A Rotorua district councillor has expressed concern about children growing up in motels next door to gang members and Australia s 501 deportees.
Some people in motels are in survival mode, Rotorua Lakes councillor Merepeka Raukawa-Tait says.

Rotorua Lakes councillor Merepeka Raukawa-Tait made the comments at a council Strategy, Policy and Finance Committee meeting on Thursday as part of discussions surrounding a draft council plan to address community safety.
So-called 501 deportees are criminal New Zealand citizens deported from Australia.
They are named for the section of the Australian Immigration Act that allowed visas to be stripped from New Zealand residents who had disqualified themselves on character grounds.
Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta says Dutton's comments "only serve to trash his own reputation", while Chris Hipkins says it means Australia is "exporting its garbage".
