Queensland increases resources exploration spending

Advertisement Resource exploration spending in Queensland increased by almost AUS$130 million or 23% in 2020, according to new data released by the Australia Bureau of Statistics. Queensland Resources Council (QRC) Chief Executive, Ian Macfarlane, said increased expenditure in coal, metals and gas exploration was a strong signal in the long-term confidence of the resources sector, particularly in the wake of the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on sections of the economy. “These latest exploration expenditure figures tell a very positive story about the new investment and new jobs that are going to help Queensland work and earn its way through COVID,” Macfarlane said.

Record growth in Queensland exploration industry expected to continue

Queensland Exploration Council (QEC) Chair, Kim Wainwright, said exploration expenditure in Queensland has been robust over most of the past 10 years, apart from a drop in 2015 – 2017, but had been on a steep upwards trajectory since 2018. “For the past decade, the QEC’s annual Scorecard publication has shown a highly positive explorer sentiment towards resource prospectivity, which is very good news for our industry and a barometer for how well the resources sector is travelling,” she said.Wainwright told a gathering of more than 130 explorers, producers, investors, researchers and regulators that Queensland had enormous resources prospects and a skilled workforce focused on “that next big discovery.”

Photograph: Richard Wainwright/AAP A “remarkable” number of homeless people were placed in emergency accomodation at the height of the Covid pandemic but only a third of rough sleepers were later moved into long-term housing, a new report states. The report, released on Thursday by University of New South Wales and the Australian Council of Social Service (Acoss), argues many of those housed in emergency shelters during the pandemic are now homeless again due to a lack of social housing stock. Drawing on unpublished data from NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, researchers found that between mid-March and the end of September 2020 emergency accommodation was provided to more than 40,000 people, a figure described as “remarkable”.

APAL strategy sets export market priorities APAL has developed a Technical Market Access Strategy for both apples and pears to prioritise the new market access and market improvement priorities of the Australian industry. This roadmap combines an overview of existing technical market access status with industry preferences for future market access and market improvement from a technical point of view, in line with available supporting efficacy data for the treatment of pests and disease. The Technical Market Access Strategy should be read in conjunction with the Apple & Pear Export Market Development Strategy (McKinna 2017) which was an economic analysis of market opportunities from a commercial perspective funded by Hort Innovation. Since completing the Technical Market Access Strategies in mid-2020, APAL has communicated industry’s market access and market improvement priorities to Government, and worked with technical experts to engage with some of Australia’s bilateral tra
